The High Priestess

The High Priestess tarot cardThe High Priestess Meaning of the Symbols.

The Tarot High Priestess represents the keeper of  feminine secrets, she is spiritual enlightenment and inner illumination, she holds the Tora, the book of divine law, to her body, half hidden under her shawl. This symbolises her willingness to share those secrets but only with those who are deserving of the knowledge.

The Crescent Moon lies by the High Priestess's feet, this moon symbolises feminine qualities and unconscious knowledge, it is the sudden intuitive realisations of realities that comes only to a woman in time of great need. The Crescent Moon can also represent the subtle darkness that comes before the dim brightness of the full moon.

The High Priestess sits upon a simple block to show she has no feelings of superiority over the people she helps, her serene pose shows her self confidence, she knows she is a figure of authority over all she surveys.

The solar Cross on the High Priestess's chest has four equal sides, this cross can symbolize many different thing, the four elements, north south east and west to indicate the High Priestess's domain over all earth, the Magicians tools, it also symbolises a union of male and female entities to unite with God and create a balanced cosmic energy. The Pomegranates also forms the top of the Tree of Life, with the solar cross representing Tithareth and just Yesod plus Malkuth hidden behind her gown.

When a Veil is decorated with Pomegranates it symbolises the hidden female aspect within us, when a veil is decorated with palm leaves in symbolises the hidden male aspect within us, in the veil behind the High Priestess there are both pomegranates and palm leaves to symbolize the potential to get together and procreate. The Veil here is hiding the secret knowledge which lies behind the two pillars of king Solomon’s temple.

The two pillars form the entrance to king Solomon's temple, (also known as the First Temple) the letters on the pillars stand for Jachim and Boaz, they symbolise the divine man and the earthly man respectively. They may also symbolise the entrance to the great depths of reality and secret wisdom or just complete opposites like right and wrong or night and day, left and right, white and black, positive and negative, light and dark, birth and death, build and destroy, good and bad, man and woman.

The Horned Crown symbolises the Goddess Isis, she is the Goddess of the Moon and the supernatural, it can also represent complete opposites like the two pillars,

The Crystal Ball sitting in the centre of the horned crown is a symbol of the mystical wisdom that can only come from within. Some say the ball is the full Moon, then it would represent the mysteries of the hidden places, things that go bump in the night, or mysteries that revealed themselves to her.
